Dependants of Global Talent applicants

You can bring your spouse, civil partner, unmarried partner, and children under 18.

  • Spouses/civil partners must prove their marriage is legally recognised.

  • Unmarried partners must show cohabitation for at least two years.

  • Children over 16 must live with you and have no family of their own (unless at school or university).

Dependants apply separately and need your application reference (GWF or UAN) if applying from abroad. Inside the UK, they can apply simultaneously.

Requirements focus on proof of relationship and address; their application depends on the main applicant’s status.

Dependants can work (except as sportspersons/coaches), study, and travel freely in the UK. Children can attend state schools but pay international fees at university until ILR is granted.

Dependants become eligible for ILR after five years, aligned with the main applicant’s settlement.

Research Grant from an Endorsed Funder Route

You are eligible for endorsement for a Global Talent visa under the Endorsed Funder route if you provide critical contributions to work funded by an eligible research grant. The research grant must come from an endorsed funder approved by UKRI, and you must be hosted or employed by a UK research organisation listed on the UKRI approved list. Your work has to be critical for the successful execution of the funded project. UKRI acts as the endorsing body for this route, and endorsement applications are fast-tracked.

To be eligible, you must either direct independently, or under the supervision of a Principal Investigator, a unique research or innovation project and meet all the following: have a PhD qualification or equivalent research experience (including industrial or clinical research); actively participate in a relevant field in a university, research institute, or industry; and have your name or post listed on the grant or award as the Principal or Co-investigator, Researcher Co-investigator, Post-doctoral researcher, Research Assistant, or an equivalent position acceptable to UKRI.

Alternatively, you may make critical contributions to research by providing core technical or domain excellence or developing new technologies and methodologies, and meet both the following: have a UK bachelor’s degree or equivalent overseas research degree or equivalent research experience (including industrial or clinical research); and have research experience within a university, research institute, or industry.

You must have at least one year remaining on your employment contract or hosting agreement with a UKRI-approved research organisation and a grant from an endorsed funder for at least £30,000 covering a minimum of two years. The grant must be won in an open competition or be a renewable award subject to periodic peer review. At least 50% of your time must be spent working on the project, and your participation must be essential for its execution.

Peer review - endorsement application

If you’re not eligible under the Academic Appointment, Individual Fellowship, or Research Grant routes, you can apply for endorsement through peer review via the Royal Society, British Academy, or Royal Academy of Engineering.

There are two options:

Exceptional Promise (Potential Leader):

  • PhD or equivalent research experience

  • Early career researcher

  • Recommendation from a UK-based eminent academic familiar with your work and potential

Exceptional Talent (Leader):

  • Active researcher with PhD or equivalent experience

  • Two recommendation letters from senior UK experts confirming your leadership and contribution to UK research

Peer review considers awards, funding, leadership, strength of references, and UK impact. Approval is discretionary and this route is not eligible for fast track.
